Introduction

Pursuing a dream often requires resilience, dedication, and the willingness to adapt. My journey toward securing a seat in the IIT Madras BS program in Data Science has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with ups and downs. Here, I will share my personal experience to inspire those aspiring to step into the world of data science and demonstrate that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

Let me tell you in short.

The Beginning: Discovering My Passion for Data Science

My name is Anas Khan, and I am a 19-year-old from Uttarakhand. I completed my schooling from a Hindi-medium school with Science as my main stream, focusing on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). Growing up, I had always been fascinated by technology and computers. During my school days, I spent countless hours tinkering with computers, which laid the foundation for my interest in the tech world.

After passing my 12th standard, I had to take a gap year due to severe health issues. I suffer from asthma, which made it extremely challenging for me to focus on studies at times. Despite this setback, my curiosity for technology kept me motivated. During this period, I came across a fascinating field called Data Science. What intrigued me the most was that it is among the highest-paid fields in Computer Science, offering endless possibilities for innovation and problem-solving.

With a newfound passion, I began exploring more about data science. Meanwhile, I worked at a computer institute for nearly two years, gaining hands-on experience and deepening my understanding of technology. These experiences further solidified my desire to pursue a career in data science

Building a Strong Foundation: My Role as an Instructor

During my gap year, while recovering from my health challenges, I didn’t let time go to waste. I joined a leading computer educational institute in my area as an instructor. This role was a turning point in my life. For nearly two years, I taught students essential computer skills, ranging from basic operations to advanced applications.

This teaching experience not only deepened my technical knowledge but also boosted my confidence in explaining concepts and solving problems. As an instructor, I developed a structured approach to learning and teaching, which later proved invaluable when preparing for the IIT Madras BS Qualifier.

Moreover, this role allowed me to stay connected with technology and further fueled my interest in the dynamic field of data science. While teaching others, I realized how much I enjoyed exploring the "why" behind every technical concept, which ultimately led me to seek a deeper understanding of data science and its applications.

The Turning Point: IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science

In 2023, I stumbled upon a golden opportunity—IIT Madras was offering an online BS program in Data Science and Applications. The program stood out for its flexibility, high-quality curriculum, and accessibility to students from all walks of life. For someone like me, coming from a small town and a Hindi-medium background, this was a chance to study at one of the most prestigious institutes in India without the constraints of relocating or attending a traditional classroom.

I decided to register for the program in the September 2023 term. The entry to the degree program, however, required passing a Qualifier Exam, a test designed to assess foundational knowledge in Mathematics, Statistics, English, and Computational Thinking.

The First Attempt: Facing My Fear of Mathematics

When I began preparing for the Qualifier, I realized I had a significant challenge to overcome—Mathematics. Coming from a Hindi-medium background and having a natural fear of Maths, I found it difficult to grasp some concepts. Despite preparing for a month, I could not clear the Qualifier exam on my first attempt, primarily because I struggled with the Maths section.

The failure was disheartening, but it was also a wake-up call. I realized that I needed better resources and guidance to strengthen my weak areas.

A Ray of Hope: Discovering Let's Learn

During my preparation for the second attempt, I discovered Let's Learn, a YouTube channel dedicated to helping students like me prepare for the IIT Madras Qualifier. Their beginner-friendly content and structured approach to teaching made all the difference.

I devoted myself to following their videos and diligently practiced the topics they covered. For someone like me, who had always been afraid of Maths, their step-by-step guidance turned out to be a game-changer.

The Second Attempt: Turning Failure into Success

With better preparation and a renewed sense of confidence, I attempted the Qualifier again in December 2023. This time, I was not just solving problems; I was understanding the concepts behind them. When the results came out, I was thrilled to learn that I had passed the Qualifier!

This moment was a testament to my belief that hard work, persistence, and the right guidance can help you overcome even the toughest challenges.

Life as an IIT Madras BS Student

In January 2024, I officially began the Foundation Level of the IIT Madras BS program. The curriculum has been both challenging and rewarding. For someone who feared Maths and Statistics, I am now learning these subjects with interest and enthusiasm. The program also includes English 1 and English 2, which have significantly improved my language skills. Today, I feel more confident expressing myself in English, both verbally and in writing.

Apart from academics, the program has introduced me to Computational Thinking and Python programming, which are vital skills for a career in data science. The self-paced nature of the program allows me to balance my studies with other commitments, making it an ideal choice for working professionals and students alike.

What I Have Learned So Far

Resilience is Key: Failing the Qualifier in my first attempt was a humbling experience, but it taught me to never give up.

The Importance of Resources: Finding the right resources, like Let's Learn, can make a world of difference in understanding difficult concepts.

Continuous Improvement: The program has not only enhanced my technical skills but has also helped me grow personally. From improving my English to gaining confidence in Maths, every aspect of this journey has been transformative.

Advice for Aspiring Students

1. Don’t Be Afraid of Failure: The Qualifier is not easy (atleast for me it wasn't) , but with consistent effort and the right guidance, you can pass it.

2. Use Available Resources: Platforms like Let's Learn and IIT Madras's preparatory material are invaluable. Make full use of them.

3. Believe in Yourself: Coming from a Hindi-medium background or a small town should never be a limitation. Your determination and willingness to learn will always take you forward.

Conclusion

Looking back, my journey from a small town in Uttarakhand to becoming an IIT Madras BS student has been an incredible experience. The challenges I faced only made me stronger and more determined. Today, I am not just pursuing a degree; I am chasing my dreams and redefining what is possible for someone with my background.

To anyone out there considering the IIT Madras BS program, I encourage you to take the leap. Your journey may not be easy, but it will undoubtedly be worth it. Remember, every step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.
