Foundation से लेकर BS Degree तक आखिर क्या पढ़ाया जाता है? आइए IIT Madras BS curriculum को simple language में समझते हैं.

Agar आप IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications join करने का सोच रहे हैं, तो एक सवाल almost हर student के मन में आता है: आखिर इस degree में पढ़ना क्या है?
नाम में Data Science है, लेकिन पूरा curriculum सिर्फ Machine Learning और AI तक limited नहीं है. शुरुआत Mathematics, Statistics, Programming और English से होती है. फिर Database Management, Data Structures, Java, Application Development, Machine Learning और Data Science जैसे subjects आते हैं. आगे BS level पर Software Engineering, AI, Deep Learning और electives का exposure मिलता है.
और एक चीज जो इस program को थोड़ा अलग बनाती है, वह है इसका level-based structure. IIT Madras के current academic structure के अनुसार पूरे program में six levels हैं. लेकिन अगर आपका goal specifically BS Degree in Data Science and Applications है, तो आपको पहले four levels successfully complete करने होते हैं: Foundation, Diploma, BSc Degree और BS Degree. इसके बाद PG Diploma और M.Tech आगे के postgraduate options हैं. इन चार levels को complete करने पर learner BS Degree in Data Science and Applications प्राप्त कर सकता है. इसके बाद eligible students PG Diploma in AI & ML और फिर M.Tech in AI & ML की तरफ आगे बढ़ सकते हैं.
यानी Foundation → Diploma → BSc → BS आपकी BS Degree की main academic journey है. PG Diploma और M.Tech इस four-level BS pathway का हिस्सा नहीं हैं, बल्कि BS के बाद के additional postgraduate levels हैं.

इसके बाद PG Diploma level में 20 additional credits और M.Tech level में further 20 credits हैं. इसलिए complete BS + PG Diploma + M.Tech pathway कुल 182 credits तक जा सकता है. Official IIT Madras structure.
Foundation Level को इस पूरे program की base समझ सकते हैं. अगर आपने पहले Data Science या programming नहीं पढ़ी है, तो भी यहां से शुरुआत की जा सकती है.
Foundation में 8 courses और 32 credits होते हैं. IIT Madras के अनुसार इन courses का purpose learner को आगे Diploma Level के technical subjects के लिए तैयार करना है.
यहां Mathematics और Statistics को सिर्फ formal subjects समझना mistake होगी. आगे Machine Learning और Data Science पढ़ते समय probability, statistics, linear algebra और calculus जैसी concepts बार-बार काम आती हैं.
इसी तरह Computational Thinking और Python आगे आने वाले programming और technical courses की foundation बनाते हैं.
Foundation के सभी 8 courses successfully complete करने के बाद learner Foundation Certificate के साथ exit कर सकता है या Diploma Level में आगे बढ़ सकता है.
Foundation के बाद curriculum काफी interesting हो जाता है. Diploma Level में दो अलग-अलग diplomas हैं:
दोनों diplomas को complete करने पर Diploma Level से कुल 54 credits मिलते हैं. Each diploma has 27 credits.
Programming Diploma में आपको programming और software development की practical foundation मिलती है.
यानी Python के बाद आप databases, algorithms, Java, system commands और application development की तरफ move करते हैं. Projects की वजह से यह level सिर्फ theory तक limited नहीं रहता.
दूसरी तरफ Data Science Diploma आपको data और Machine Learning की world में लेकर जाता है.
September 2025 Term onwards Diploma in Data Science में remaining 6 credits के लिए students के पास दो options हैं. एक option में Business Analytics + Business Data Management Project है, जबकि दूसरे में Introduction to Deep Learning and Generative AI + Project है.
इसका मतलब है कि Diploma level पर ही students को अपने interest के हिसाब से Business Analytics या Deep Learning and Generative AI की तरफ जाने का option मिलता है.
Foundation और दोनों Diploma requirements complete करने के बाद learner BSc Degree Level में enter कर सकता है.
BSc Degree Level में 28 additional credits होते हैं. Previous levels के credits जोड़ने पर total 114 credits पूरे होते हैं.
यहां एक important distinction समझना जरूरी है. BSc Degree और BS Degree अलग qualifications हैं. BSc level successfully complete करने पर learner BSc Degree in Programming and Data Science के साथ exit कर सकता है या आगे BS Degree Level में continue कर सकता है.
इसलिए अगर आपका target BS Degree है, तो BSc कोई alternative route नहीं बल्कि BS pathway का third level है.
जब learner 114 credits complete करके BSc Degree Level की requirements पूरी कर लेता है, तभी वह BS Degree Level में enter कर सकता है.
इस level में 28 additional credits होते हैं. इन्हें complete करने के बाद total 142 credits हो जाते हैं और learner BS Degree in Data Science and Applications के लिए eligible होता है.
Current IIT Madras structure में पांच mandatory core courses हैं:
इन courses को देखकर एक बात clear है: BS level पर focus सिर्फ Data Science तक नहीं रहता. Software development, AI और Deep Learning को भी काफी importance मिलती है.
For example, Software Engineering में software development process, requirements, design और engineering practices जैसे concepts आते हैं. Deep Learning में neural networks और modern deep learning approaches पर focus किया जाता है.
Core courses के अलावा BS level पर electives available होते हैं. Current academic page पर Data Visualization Design, Speech Technology, Design Thinking for Data-Driven App Development, Industry 4.0, Market Research, Privacy and Security in Online Social Media, Introduction to Big Data और Financial Forensics जैसे courses listed हैं.
Elective availability term के हिसाब से बदल सकती है, इसलिए किसी specific term में available options के लिए IIT Madras की latest academic page check करना बेहतर है.
अगर पूरे BS pathway को एक simple progression में देखें, तो picture काफी clear हो जाती है.
Foundation में: आप सीखते हैं कि mathematics, statistics और programming की basic building blocks क्या हैं.
Diploma में: आप इन fundamentals को programming, databases, application development, Machine Learning और Data Science में apply करना शुरू करते हैं.
BSc level में: आप degree-level learning की तरफ आगे बढ़ते हैं और 114 total credits तक पहुंचते हैं.
BS level में: focus software engineering, AI, Deep Learning और advanced electives की तरफ जाता है.
यही reason है कि इस curriculum को सिर्फ "Data Science course list" की तरह देखना थोड़ा misleading होगा. इसमें programming, software development, mathematics, statistics, data science और AI सभी धीरे-धीरे build होते हैं.
नहीं. IIT Madras का program traditional fixed-semester college structure से काफी अलग है. Learners अपनी pace और performance के हिसाब से courses register करते हैं.
Official academic information के अनुसार program को complete करने के लिए maximum 8 years का overall window है. Foundation Level का indicative duration 1-3 years है, जबकि Diploma और BSc/BS levels के लिए generally 1-2 years each का duration दिया गया है.
इस flexibility का मतलब यह है कि student अपनी existing degree, job या other commitments के साथ workload plan कर सकता है. लेकिन flexibility को low workload समझना सही नहीं होगा. IIT Madras लगभग 10 hours per course per week Foundation में और higher levels पर लगभग 15 hours per course per week learner engagement बताता है.
हाँ. BS Degree के बाद eligible learners के लिए academic pathway यहीं खत्म नहीं होता.
Current IIT Madras structure में BS के बाद PG Diploma in AI & ML का option है. यह 20 additional credits का level है, जिसमें core courses और electives शामिल हैं.
इसके बाद eligible learners M.Tech in AI & ML की तरफ भी आगे बढ़ सकते हैं. M.Tech level में additional 20 credits का M.Tech Project शामिल है.
लेकिन यहां एक important point है: PG Diploma और M.Tech BS Degree के चार-level pathway का हिस्सा नहीं हैं. ये BS के बाद के postgraduate levels हैं.
अगर आप अभी Foundation में हैं, तो पूरे 142-credit curriculum को देखकर overwhelm होने की जरूरत नहीं है. फिलहाल आपका focus Mathematics, Statistics, Python और Computational Thinking पर होना चाहिए.
Diploma level पर आते ही programming और Machine Learning concepts ज्यादा serious हो जाएंगे. यहां सिर्फ exams clear करने के बजाय projects और practical implementation पर ध्यान देना useful रहेगा.
और जब आप BS level तक पहुंचते हैं, तब electives को thoughtfully choose करना important हो जाता है. अगर आपका interest AI में है, तो AI और Deep Learning related courses useful हो सकते हैं. अगर आपका focus broader software or data applications पर है, तो दूसरे electives भी relevant हो सकते हैं.
Simple words में, पहले fundamentals, फिर technical skills, उसके बाद advanced applications. यही IIT Madras BS curriculum की basic progression है.
BS Degree in Data Science and Applications के लिए पहले four levels successfully complete करने होते हैं: Foundation, Diploma, BSc Degree और BS Degree. पूरे IIT Madras program structure में इसके बाद PG Diploma और M.Tech के दो additional levels हैं.
