"Wondering if pursuing a dual degree with IITM BS is worth it? Explore the benefits, challenges, and real student experiences, along with how it can help in GATE preparation."
Hello, my dear friends,
Before deciding whether a dual degree is worth it or not, you should understand that it depends on the degree you want to pursue alongside the IITM BS Degree.
I am Om, currently pursuing IITM's BS along with my BTech in Computer Science Engineering with a specialization in Data Science. I will share my real experience, so let's start:
(Read without skipping for better understanding)
Pursuing a dual degree with IITM BS in Data Science alongside a BTech can be a great combination. Many of your subjects and projects will overlap, giving you a deeper understanding of key concepts while preparing for advanced exams like GATE.
But BTech is not as similar to IITM BS as you might think. In IITM BS, you have to submit online assignments, with only 10 to 15 objective or numerical questions to solve. However, in BTech, you will get bundles of assignments to write. BTech also requires 75% attendance, and it will impact your extracurricular activities.
So, if you are a pro at time management, then definitely go for it. If not, you may face difficulties as time progresses. So, think carefully before making any decision.
As I mentioned earlier, the combination of BTech (in a related branch) and IITM BS in Data Science will allow you to deep dive into the subjects. By the middle stage of both degrees, you will feel confident enough to clear the GATE exam. The path to MSc will also be open for you, along with MTech.
Pursuing a BS with other courses like a plain BSc, or a BSc with any other specialization, is alright. Your life will be easier, and you’ll manage time for both degrees, but you should do more research and talk to as many seniors as possible for more clarity.
Whether pursuing a dual degree is the right decision or not depends entirely on your dedication to studies, your strategies, and your time management skills. Choose what fits you best.
I want to wrap up with one last thought:
The IITM BS program will provide you with next-level opportunities, and the name IITM is powerful enough—if you're capable of taking advantage of it.
Thank you. Have a great career ahead.
